Police in Saratoga County were initially called Sunday evening, Sept. 3, for a robbery in Saratoga Springs at the Ben & Jerry’s on Phila Street, according to police.

Investigators said 40-year-old Daniel McKay, of Amsterdam in Montgomery County, walked in and told an employee he was robbing the store. He implied that he had a gun but did not show any weapon.

The employee handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and McKay fled the scene, police said. No customers or employees were injured.

While Saratoga Springs Police were investigating the incident, they received word of another robbery in Malta, at the Stewart’s Shops located on Route 9.

A short time later, an officer spotted McKay at a nearby hotel, noting that he matched the suspect description from both robberies.

McKay is charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, a felony, and is suspected in a third robbery that occurred in Saratoga Springs, police said.

Following his arraignment in Malta Town Court, he was ordered held at the Saratoga County jail in lieu of bail.

“We are thankful that nobody was injured and would like to commend the staff at Ben & Jerry's for remaining calm during this frightening incident and taking swift action that assisted us in gathering necessary evidence and conducting a proper and thorough investigation,” police said in a statement.
